Your wedding is more than the hours I am behind the DJ booth. I personally handle the planning calls, music conversations, timeline details, venue preparation and the wedding itself. That preparation is how we get to a reception that feels natural instead of scripted. One DJ, one plan, one person accountable from the first call to the last song. Call or text (812) 431-8085.

One Person Accountable From Your First Call to Your Last Song

Hi — I'm Terry Tunks, owner and lead DJ of Spectrum Sound. I started DJing at Western Kentucky University in 1987 and have been producing weddings across the Tri-State since 1992. When you hire Spectrum Sound, you work with me from the first consultation through the last song. Not a booking agency. Not whoever's available. Me. That is why I spend 9 to 18 hours on a Mount Vernon wedding before the first song — the walk-through at Cedarhurst or the Granada, the timeline, the vendor calls.

Mount Vernon is the cultural and civic capital of Southern Illinois, a county seat at the crossroads of I-57 and I-64, and the venue options here are genuinely impressive. Jefferson County crowds mix country, classic rock and current pop within the same family, and a floor where grandparents and college-aged cousins both dance needs a DJ who bridges generations without losing anyone. The town has hosted big rooms for a long time: in 1859 Abraham Lincoln argued the Illinois Central tax case in the 1857 Appellate Courthouse downtown, the only courthouse still in use where he practiced. A wedding at the Granada or Cedarhurst is in good historic company.

01 — 9–18 hours of preparation and performance. An under-prepared DJ means dead air during your first dance or a timeline that collapses when the photographer runs five minutes late. I invest 9–18 hours so none of that happens at your Mount Vernon celebration.
02 — Cheese-free. Always. No wigs, no table-standing, no garter-toss humiliation games. Your guests laugh and dance naturally, and everything just moves.
03 — Transparent pricing. No hidden fees. What's in your contract is what you pay, to the dollar. Travel, add-ons and overtime are each their own line on the quote, stated before you sign — nothing blended in, nothing added later.
04 — Backup equipment on-site. Every time. Equipment can fail. Mine doesn't — I bring a full backup system to every wedding. Ask every candidate whether they carry redundant equipment on-site.

Every Family Has Its Own Musical Language

There is a difference between knowing a venue and knowing a wedding. I can learn the load-in, power and acoustics on a site visit. Learning your people takes conversation, questions and attention to the music that has followed you through your lives.

From there I organize the details that keep the night from feeling organized: introductions, special dances, timing, family considerations, announcements, venue logistics and coordination with the vendor team. The structure stays behind the scenes so the celebration can stay out front.

A plan should give us confidence, not handcuffs. That is the balance I want for your Mount Vernon wedding: enough structure to protect the important moments, enough flexibility to respond to the people who actually show up.

Cedarhurst, the Granada, Rend Lake & the Rest

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts — 90 mi. A campus of sculpture grounds alongside a gallery and indoor event spaces, with the historic Schweinfurth House on the same campus for intimate ceremonies. I know its coordinator requirements and how to set up sound within its architectural character.
The Granada Theatre — 90 mi. Built in 1937 by the Boller Brothers, the Art Deco Granada seats 500 for dinner and dancing with two art deco bars. Old plaster walls and balcony overhangs create reflections that need careful placement and tuning.
Rend Lake, the Convention Center & the Barns. Rend Lake Resort and the Rend Lake Golf Resort give lakeside options with semi-outdoor spaces; the Convention Center handles the largest receptions. A Pocket Full of Sunshine and A Walk in the Wind are the rural estates on my list.

More verified rooms nearby, each at its own town's zone: Schweinfurth House at Cedarhurst, Mount Vernon Convention Center, Eagles Nest at the Lake (West Frankfort), Camp Manitowa (Benton).

The Room Keeps Giving Me Clues

Your must-plays give us anchors. Your do-not-play list gives us boundaries. Everything between them is where experience, timing and reading the room become important.

My music library gives me options; experience gives those options context. I can move across eras, genres and generations without treating the reception like a random shuffle because every change still has to make sense for your wedding.

Some rooms want more edge; some want more familiarity. I am looking for the Baby Bear balance — not too hot, not too cold, just right for your crowd. Not my definition of “just right” — yours, interpreted through what we planned together and what the room is telling me in real time.

PicsPhotoBooth.com — One Invoice with Your DJ

My sister brand, running since 2010. Self-serve is $300; printed strips start at $500. One contract, one retainer, one invoice. Booked with the DJ, the booth is priced as part of the night rather than as a separate rental — we set that at the consultation.

Dancing on a Cloud — $300 Add-On

For four minutes, the floor disappears. A low, rolling cloud of chilled fog fills the dance floor and stops at the ankles, so on the Granada's floor beneath the Art Deco proscenium the two of you appear to be standing on it. It stays down on the floor rather than in the air, keeping your photographer's shots clean, and clears in minutes with nothing left behind. Cleared with the venue at the walk-through, same invoice as the DJ.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wedding DJ Mount Vernon, IL

What does preparation look like before my Mount Vernon wedding?

We form a team before the wedding. Your song choices give me clues about what “good music” means to you, and we also work through the timeline, introductions, special dances, family considerations, do-not-plays, microphone style and venue details. I use that preparation as a framework, then stay flexible when the actual room gives us new information.

How do you decide what to play at a Mount Vernon reception?

I start with the musical clues you give me, then read the room live — who is dancing, who is not, which generations are responding and whether the energy needs to build, breathe or change direction. My organized library of more than 250,000 songs gives me options; experience helps me choose the option that fits your people rather than somebody else’s wedding.

Which Mount Vernon area venues has Spectrum Sound worked?

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, the Granada Theatre, Rend Lake Resort, the Mount Vernon Convention Center, and rural estates like A Pocket Full of Sunshine and A Walk in the Wind. Six rooms on my verified 142-venue list are in Mount Vernon itself.

Do you charge a travel fee for Mount Vernon weddings?

Mount Vernon is 90 miles from Evansville up I-64 — Zone 4, a flat $300 travel fee added to the tier price and included transparently in your quote before you sign. No lodging line at this distance.

Who actually DJs my Mount Vernon wedding?

I do — Terry Tunks, personally, from the first call to the last song. The person who walks Cedarhurst or the Granada with you before your date is the person behind the booth on it — no subcontractors, no substitutes, no whoever's available that Saturday.

How much does a wedding DJ cost in Mount Vernon, IL?

Wedding DJ pricing in Mount Vernon, IL starts at $895 off-peak and $1,550 for reception only on standard dates. Most Mount Vernon weddings fall between $1,850 and $2,400 all-in for full-service coverage. The Zone 4 travel fee of $300 from Evansville is quoted transparently before you sign, and the quote is the invoice.
